Andrew Umstead began his career at Michigan State University in 2016 as an intern in the lab of Dr. Irving Vega. He has been the laboratory manager for the Vega lab since 2018. Mr. Umstead has a B.S. in Biology with an emphasis in Physiology from Northern Michigan University (2014) and an M.S. in Cell and Molecular Biology from Grand Valley State University (2017). Mr. Umstead’s technical expertise lies in the area of proteomics. His skillset includes techniques such as PCR, western blotting, protein purification, immunoprecipitation, and mass spectrometry. Mr. Umstead is also the lab technician for the Integrated Mass Spectrometry Unit (IMSU) core facility housed at the GRRC. When he isn’t in the lab he enjoys cycling, running, and enjoying the outdoors with his wife and dog.
